There is Roller Derby in East Texas?
You don't know how many times we are asked this question when people find out what we do. The answer is YES. Madams of Mayhem Roller Derby is a league of women founded in 2016 who are dedicating their time to do good in the community, bring Roller Derby back to attention, and have fun in the process. MMRD is based out of Longview TX, but our sisters are from Longview, Tyler, Kilgore, Gilmer, Gladewater, Henderson, Quitman.... We are actively looking for women to join us, non-skating officials, and referees to help us with fundraising and events, and venues to help us spread our love of Derby to the public.
What is Roller Derby? Roller Derby is a fast paced, full contact sport, that all takes place on, you got it, quad roller skates. Two teams of 5 players take the track with the goal of each teams point makers (Jammers) to get past the other teams blockers (Blockers) who are working at both offense/defense at the same time to help their team get as many points as possible.
But isn't that dangerous? Yes and No. This ain't yo mamma's Roller Derby. Everyone remembers past-time Roller Derby complete with clotheslines and fists flying. Thanks to WFTDA (Women's Flat Track Derby Association) Roller Derby has became a genuine sport complete with rules and safety guidelines. This is an international thing! (GOOGLE it. I'll wait.) It's as dangerous as any full contact sport can be, but we come equipped with helmets, mouth guards, elbow pads, and knee pads. Safety First Ladies!
FHE (Frequently Heard Excuses) - Anytime we mention Roller Derby, everyone's ears perk up in interest, and excuses start flying out their mouths. Here are just a few of those, and our counter-arguments:
"I'm too old to do that...." Our derby sisters ages range from their 20s to their 50s. There is no age "too old" for this sport. (Minimum age is 18 however).
"I'm way out of shape" You might be. But you won't be. Skate with us a couple of times a week and you will remember what those muscles you forgot about feel like, all without stepping foot into a gym.
"I can't skate, I haven't been on skates in (insert arbitrary number here) years...." Great! No bad habits to break! Here is the kicker, we can TEACH you. We can mold you into Roller Derby Kick-Ass Greatness!!! It's what we do. We teach you how to play the game, fall without hurting yourself (yes it is possible), give/receive hits, fancy footwork, and if we have to start from the ground floor, how to tie your skate laces. It's a "NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY" thing. We won't look down on you, make fun of you, or get exasperated by you.
"I don't have time to do that..." We all have time somewhere, it just depends on how we utilize it. All of our derby sisters work full-time jobs (sometimes more than one), are wives, mothers, students. We are nurses, teachers, retailers, office managers.... We make time. Practice is 1-2 days a week (depending on how often you want to) for two hours in the evening. For many of us, this is our escape, our "me time", our time to burn off the steam and stress of our everyday lives, our time for our physical fitness. We make the time because we love it.
So what now, anymore excuses?
Hit us up. Ask us questions. Come to a practice to watch. Come to a practice to TRY it (bring $5 and a preformed mouthguard, let us know you are coming - we have skates and gear for you use).
Every single person who falls in love with this sport has the same complaint "I wish I would have started sooner." We are a sisterhood. We are friends. We are a family. We push each other and make each other better. We want you to join us.
